Robert Turnbull (1843-1888) was a native of Scotland who was in Los Angeles by 1876 and was involved in sheep raising. By the early 1880s, he acquired land in the Puente Hills, which he sold to the Pickering Land and Water Company, founders of Whittier, in 1887.
In January 1888, Turnbull was found dead, under mysterious circumstances, in the Los Angeles River, near the Macy Street Viaduct (later renamed Cesar E. Chavez Viaduct). Turnbull Canyon and Turnbull Canyon Road between Whittier and Hacienda Heights were named after him.
